Centralise the monitoring of all your database servers

Image of a branching tree

How to centralise your monitoring (Failed Jobs, Unrun Backups, T-Log size, Cyclic Test Restores, Cyclic ReIndexing, Disk Space and Disk Space History and so on) of all your SQL Servers (and their databases) from an ASP.Net site on your local machine. These set of articles concentrate on the web development side of the reports and show how to display the results of  stored procs locally served by Internet Information Services (IIS). They are geared towards the DBA with T-SQL development experience but with less exposure to ASP.Net development.

SQL Server's Spatial capabilities & climate driven hazardous zones - Monday, November 02, 2009
SQL Server's Spatial capabilities & climate driven hazardous zones

A recent application I developed www.hazardmappings.com; an online Climate Risk assessment application, used for assessing climate driven hazardous zones within residential areas in the region. The application utilises SQL Server 2008’s Spatial capabilities, (hundreds of thousands of rows) the Bing Maps Geospatial platform, WPF Silverlight, WCF web services and binary encoded coordinates (to reduce network traffic thus increasing performance).

Compress Your Database Backups With SQL Squeeeeze Minimize

 SQL Squeeze

Backups take up a HUGE amount of space. Whilst hard drives are indeed cheaper today, if you have large databases and lots of them, the Image of the SQL Squeeze iconspace needed can add up. What's more, high-end system drives actually aren't cheap at all, and if you don't have 3rd party tools such as Litespeed, or native Enterprise Edition tools, then they can be cause of a faily nasty headache. Thankfully character data backups compress very well, meaning we can save a lot of disk space and hold on to more days worth of database backups. Due to limited resources, I wrote my own tool to do this and you're welcome to use it. It's written in .Net, is about 200kb, is flexible allowing you to specify extentions, paths, rates of compression and retention periods before files are compressed or deleted. Code is explained in detail and the executable can be downloaded as freeware.

    About This Site Minimize

Why "The Budding DBA?"

Many years ago, I really wanted t work with databases. My employer had no position going though and elsewhere there were very few junior DBA vacancies that didn't assume you were still living with your parents. Even then, they all wanted some An Acorn Sproutingexperience in DBA'ing of some kind. A catch-22 scenario and I could not for the life of me figure out how to break into the field.

Many years later and I administer (soley, might I add) over 47 SQL Servers and absolutely love it. There are undoubtely others in the situation that I was in, way back then, and so my intention on this site is to convey how to realistically get your foot in the door with out being sponsored. Before I do though, I want to point out that even now, for me personally, no matter how much you know, there is still something foolish about believing you are at the pinnacle point of your profession. Everyday I learn something new and revel in it. There will always be more to learn and there will always be others that know more about areas in your profession than you do, as you will them. Hence, this site is named so, based on those humble career beginnings, and the importance of remaining grounded in one's profession.

And the other thing; this site is certainly not just for the budding dba, as there are articles written to cater for DBAs of all levels...
